91 new athletic trainer job postings this week.
That makes this one of the quieter weeks we have had since early spring, but that is not particularly surprising. It is mid-August. Fall sports are getting underway, and most programs that desperately needed someone before the season have either made a hire or are getting very close.
The summer hiring rush is slowing down.
One number is moving in a direction I like a whole lot more:
80%+ SALARY TRANSPARENCY THIS WEEK
More than 80% of this week's postings included salary information. That is exactly the direction I want to see the market continue moving.
Whether that is because employers still hiring in August know they need to be competitive, because salary transparency is genuinely improving, or some combination of the two, I'll take it.
And even in a slower week, there are some legitimately good opportunities on the board.
The headliner is Baltimore County Public Schools, which posted a 12-month secondary school athletic trainer position topping out at $145,090. That is the second-highest full-time annual secondary school salary ceiling we have seen on the board this year, behind only Prince George's County back in April.
A NICE UPDATE FROM COWETA COUNTY Earlier this summer, Coweta County Schools in Georgia was featured in our In the Seat series while they worked to fill their remaining athletic training openings. They have now filled their final position ahead of the start of fall sports. That is exactly the kind of update I love getting. The goal of In the Seat has never been to simply rewrite a job description. It is to give athletic trainers a better look at the actual opportunity - compensation, schedule, expectations, community, and what the job really looks like. I'm not going to pretend one feature magically fills a position. Hiring doesn't work that way. But if AT Finder can help get a good opportunity in front of more of the right people and play even a small part in making that connection, then we're doing what we set out to do. Congratulations to Coweta County on getting fully staffed for the fall. |
Let’s get into the picks.

Athletic Trainer - Baltimore County Public Schools
Randallstown, MD | $74,080-$145,090 | 12-Month
This one was an easy choice for the top spot.
The $145,090 ceiling is the second-highest full-time annual secondary school salary we have seen on the AT Finder board this year. But don't overlook the other end of the range: the floor is $74,080.
That is already a competitive starting point before factoring in experience, longevity, or the rest of the benefits package. The position is eligible for the Maryland State Retirement System, with 403(b) and 457 options, medical, dental, vision, and life insurance. Additional compensation may also be available through relocation bonuses, extra-duty activities, and student activities.
No, you should not look at this posting and assume you're walking in at $145K. What you should do is ask exactly where your experience places you on the salary scale.
One other important detail: the posting closes August 19. If you're interested, don't save this one for later.
Athletic Trainer - Concentra
Visalia, CA | $80,000-$86,000
California salaries always need some context. Visalia isn't San Francisco, Los Angeles, or San Diego, which makes an $80,000-$86,000 salary range much more interesting from a purchasing-power standpoint.
The position also includes a 401(k) with employer match and full medical, dental, and vision coverage.
The biggest thing I would want to understand before getting too excited is the actual coverage structure. How many client sites are you responsible for? Are you working independently or as part of a larger team? Get those answers, but the salary itself deserves a look.
Athletic Trainer - UC Riverside
Riverside, CA | $71,932-$127,994
Here is your weekly reminder: a salary ceiling is not necessarily your salary.
UC Riverside posted a huge $71,932-$127,994 range, with four to seven years of experience required. The benefits are strong, including the UC pension system, employer-paid dental and vision coverage, and continuing education support.
There is clearly upside here. But before getting excited about $128K, find out where someone with your experience actually enters the scale. That number matters a lot more than the top of the posting.
Athletic Trainer - Medford Public Schools
Medford, MA | $75,000-$91,000 | 209 Days
This might quietly be one of the better secondary school postings of the summer.
$75,000-$91,000 for a 209-day position.
Yes, Medford is outside Boston, and the cost of living is higher than the national average. With that in mind, It is still a realatively strong compensation range for a school-based athletic trainer in the Northeast.
The role covers both high school and middle school programs. The biggest unanswered question in the posting is retirement. If this role includes eligibility for a Massachusetts public retirement plan, the total compensation package becomes even more interesting.
This one is worth a look.
Certified Athletic Trainer - Brush School District RE-2J
Brush, CO | $55,000-$76,000
This one is a wild card, but could be interesting because you have the opportunity to build an athletic training program instead of inheriting one.
Brush is launching a brand-new athletic training program, meaning whoever takes this role has an opportunity to shape how the program operates from the beginning. Colorado PERA retirement benefits, health insurance, and continuing education support are included.
For me, the big questions here go beyond salary, but finding out where you would slot in on the salary scale is important. The lower end of this scale simply would not cut it in CO.
I also want to know: What facility space is available? What equipment and supplies already exist? What budget are you getting? How much administrative support is behind the program?
Building something from scratch can be a great opportunity. It can also be a nightmare if 'build the program' really means 'figure everything out yourself with no resources.' Find out which one this is.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
These employers have committed resources to enhancing their job's visibility and confirmed their salary ranges.
★ Athletic Trainer (6 Openings) | Sentara Healthcare — Portsmouth Public Schools
Portsmouth, VA | $51,000–$85,000 (Annual)
Sentara Healthcare is hiring six full-time Athletic Trainers for a newly awarded contract at Portsmouth Public Schools — each position serving as the sole AT at an assigned middle or high school. This is a 12-month employment structure with full medical benefits. The benefit package here is genuinely comprehensive: $400 per month in student loan repayment up to $10,000 total, 3% 401(k)/403(b) match, Medbridge subscription for CEUs, tuition reimbursement, 2.5 weeks of paid vacation, 4 weeks of paid parental leave, the ability to sell back unused earned time off at your hourly rate, an annual $250 wellness Visa gift card, a holiday bonus, annual performance raises, and market rate adjustments. The student loan repayment structure alone is one of the more unusual employer benefits on this board all year. Portsmouth runs close to the national average on cost of living. Ask about supply budgets, physician oversight structure, and how the middle school ATs coordinate with the high school staff.
★ Head Athletic Trainer — Hampton Roads Soccer Complex | Sentara Health
Virginia Beach, VA | $51,000–$85,000 (Annual)
An unusual and genuinely interesting setting — a 24-field soccer complex in Virginia Beach covering athletes from age 4 through 55+, multiple sports leagues year-round, two major annual tournaments including the North American Sand Soccer Championships, and 10 hours per week in a PT clinic. The scope is broader than a traditional sideline AT role and includes weekend tournament coverage as a core expectation. The same Sentara benefit structure applies: student loan repayment, 401(k)/403(b) match, Medbridge, tuition reimbursement, paid parental leave, and the time sellback option. Virginia Beach runs slightly above the national average on cost of living. The honest caveat is the schedule — weeknight practice coverage and weekend tournament events are core to the role.
Worth Calling Out This Week
Assistant Athletic Trainer - Idaho State University
Pocatello, ID | $34,312-$37,312 | 9-Month
Here we go again.
BOC certification required. State licensure required. CPR/AED certification required.
Salary: $34,312-$37,312.
Yes, it is a nine-month position. Yes, Pocatello has a relatively low cost of living. Yes, the posting describes the retirement plan and paid time off positively.
None of that changes the number.
The floor is $34,312 for a board-certified, state-licensed healthcare professional and don't get me started on the ceiling.
We can talk about total compensation. We can account for geography. We can acknowledge a nine-month schedule. We can recognize good benefits. And we can still say when the salary isn't good enough.
This one isn't good enough and the best way to communicate that is through silence. Let this one go unfilled until they are able to bring it up to a living wage. There are plenty more competitive offers out there.
What's Worth Noting This Week:
PRN Postings Are Coming to AT Finder
This one is happening for a pretty simple reason: you asked for it.
Over the last several months, I've heard from athletic trainers looking to pick up occasional PRN work and from organizations trying to find ATs for individual events or build a larger PRN pool.
So we're giving both sides another place to connect.
Organizations will now be able to use AT Finder to post PRN opportunities or recruit athletic trainers who may be interested in joining their PRN pool.
WHAT THIS IS - AND WHAT IT IS NOT AT Finder is not becoming a PRN staffing company. We are not vetting athletic trainers. We are not assigning coverage. We are not guaranteeing that a shift gets filled. We are simply providing another avenue for connections to be made. |
An organization can say, 'We're looking for PRN athletic trainers in this area.'
An athletic trainer can say, 'I'd be interested in picking up some work.'
From there, it is up to the organization and the athletic trainer to determine whether it is a good fit, verify credentials and requirements, and work out the details of that relationship.
We're also not trying to compete with Go4, Premier, or the other companies that have built dedicated platforms and services around PRN athletic training coverage. That's not what we're building.
In fact, if you operate one of those platforms or work in the PRN coverage space, please reach out. I'd be happy to share more about what we're doing, learn more about what you're doing, and see whether there are opportunities to work together.
This addition has been 100% driven by requests from the AT Finder audience. And at launch, it is also 100% free.
FREE FOR ORGANIZATIONS TO POST • FREE FOR ATHLETIC TRAINERS TO USE
No complicated launch strategy. No attempt to reinvent PRN staffing.
AT Finder has always been about helping athletic trainers and organizations find each other.
This is simply one more way to do that.
The AT Finder Talent Network continues to grow as well. If you're an athletic trainer who wants employers to be able to find you instead of spending all of your time finding them, it remains free and confidential.
And now, if you're looking to pick up some PRN work, you'll have another way to find that too.
The AT Finder Talent Network is free for athletic trainers and always will be. Create your profile at atcfinder.app.
Until next week — stop looking, start finding.
