Fall sports are getting underway, and most programs that desperately needed someone before the season have either made a hire or are getting very close. The summer hiring rush is slowing down. 147 new athletic trainer jobs this week — and this may be one of the stronger compensation weeks we have had in a while. The board is also unusually balanced. Collegiate, secondary school, industrial and clinical roles are all well represented as the market shifts from peak summer hiring into the start of fall sports. A few things immediately stood out: A secondary school role starting above $84,000. Another school district with a salary schedule that reaches six figures on a

The board continues to lean heavily toward college athletics, with 41.5% of this week’s postings coming from colleges and universities — the highest collegiate share of the year. But the more important story may be the calendar. Fall sports are approaching. Preseason is beginning. Some institutions are still trying to fill positions they expected to have staffed weeks ago. That does not mean every employer suddenly has unlimited money.

The July 4th holiday week slows posting cadence across every industry, and athletic training is no exception. No six-figure ceilings on the board this week outside of a PRN posting from a small Illinois hospital. That’s the headline. Keck Medicine of USC posted a Senior Director of Athletic Medicine Operations role for the USC athletic program with a salary range of $145,600 to $240,240 — the highest ceiling this board has seen in 14 editions. It edges out the previous high (Sutter Health at $229,174 in week four). The floor is actually lower, and Los Angeles is a tougher cost-of-living market than Sacramento, so it’s not a clean sweep — but at this level, the ceiling is what matters
