Welcome to the very first edition of this weekly job digest! For the last few weeks, I’ve been working on a project to study the Athletic Training job market. I wanted to move past the anecdotes we hear in the breakroom and actually track where the profession is heading, which settings are growing, and which employers are finally offering competitive pay. What started as a personal research project has turned into a weekly deep-dive that I’m excited to share with you all.
As we kick off the first week of 2026, the "January Surge" is in full effect. Many organizations are resetting their budgets and looking for fresh talent for the new year. While the traditional collegiate and high school markets are active, my data shows that the industrial and tactical sectors are currently offering the most competitive stability, though we are seeing some secondary schools step up with very impressive salary brackets.
This week’s list features 83 new openings, including a rare non-clinical role hitting the $90,000 mark and our Featured School of the Week in Vermont.
FEATURED OPPORTUNITIES
Brattleboro Union High School Role: Athletic Trainer ($57,000 – $93,365 /yr) Location: Brattleboro, VT Why it’s worth a look: This position offers an incredibly high salary ceiling ($93k+) for the secondary school setting. For an AT, the draw here is the full-spectrum clinical autonomy: you’ll be managing everything from concussion protocols and emergency action plans to implementing sport-specific conditioning for a wide range of programs, including football, ice hockey, and nordic skiing.
The location is a major lifestyle perk; you’re in a premier outdoor hub with proximity to several major ski areas (like Mount Snow and Stratton) and a quick drive to Springfield, MA, or Boston. It’s a rare high-paying secondary school gig that offers a "small-town" feel with legitimate mountain access and big-city proximity.
Onsite Ergonomics Role: Injury Prevention Specialist ($90,000.00 /yr) Location: San Jose, CA Why it’s worth a look: This is a standout, non-clinical role for an ATC who wants to step away from traditional patient care and productivity quotas. It focuses entirely on proactive workplace musculoskeletal health and ergonomics rather than post-injury rehab. With a base salary of $90k+ and comprehensive benefits, it represents one of the highest-paying industrial paths currently on the market.
Planned Systems International Role: Athletic Trainer ($60,000 – $68,000 /yr) Location: Jacksonville, NC Why it’s worth a look: Supporting the U.S. Marine Corps’ SMIP Program at Camp LeJeune, this tactical role provides a great entry point into military medicine. It offers a consistent Monday–Friday daytime schedule, which is a significant quality-of-life upgrade from traditional athletics. It’s an excellent fit for a clinician who wants to work with high-level tactical athletes while finally reclaiming their weekends.
The Guthrie Clinic Role: Athletic Trainer - Sports Medicine - Per Diem ($47.28 /hr) Location: Johnson City, NY Why it’s worth a look: At over $47 an hour, this is one of the highest-paying per diem outreach roles I've tracked recently. For ATs in the NY/PA area, this is an excellent high-yield "side hustle" for providing services to local high school and junior high athletes. It's a low-commitment, high-compensation way to supplement your primary income.
Michigan Medicine Role: Athletic Trainer ($56,400 – $81,800 /yr) Location: Ann Arbor, MI Why it’s worth a look: While the $5,000 sign-on bonus is a great perk, the real long-term value here is the 2:1 retirement match and health coverage that starts on your first day. Being part of the interdisciplinary MedSport team offers a level of professional collaboration and clinical support that is hard to find in standard outreach settings.
University of South Carolina Role: Graduate Assistant - Doctoral Athletic Training Assistant Location: Columbia, SC Why it’s worth a look: If your long-term goal is academia, this is the most structured path I’ve found this week. It is a 9-month appointment renewable for 4 years while you pursue a PhD in Exercise Science. It’s a stable way to transition from the clinic into teaching and research under the mentorship of top-tier faculty.
